Self-Motivation Techniques
It would be excellent to have access to a motivational coach 24-7, but sometimes we have to find a way to be our own cheerleader. Unfortunately, it’s at the moments that we need inspiration the most that we are least able to conjure it up. That’s why it’s important to have a toolbox full of kick starters for when your competitive drive starts to wane.-
Music that Inspires You
-
You know that one song that, when it blares through your car speakers, you’re compelled to roll down your windows and start singing along? Keep that song nearby for low-motivation moments. Whether your tastes lean toward a rousing classical march or disco hits from the 1970s, music can quicken your pulse rate and stimulate the production of feel-good endorphins. If you don’t already have a song that pumps you up, consider perusing compilations of “jock rock” – tunes played at sporting events – for ideas. Here’s a hint: The "Rocky" theme is universally rousing.
Treat Yourself
-
If there's a task you dread, promise yourself a reward when it's completed. It can be small, like a latte for writing 10 pages of your thesis. For larger tasks consider something more major, like a new wardrobe for losing 20 pounds. If you find you respond well to rewards, consider allowing yourself smaller treats for each milestone you pass on the way to your goal.
Inspirational Books, Movies and Quotes
-
In addition to music, your favorite forms of art and entertainment can hold motivational mojo. Films dramatize life at its most extreme, featuring protagonists who have triumphed against all odds. Surely your moment of low energy or discouragement will pale in comparison to the hero who has to kill space aliens to save the universe. Or, read inspirational biographies about real people who have succeeded in the face of adversity. Finally, for a super-quick pick me up, keep a page of your favorite inspirational quotes bookmarked for a motivation refresher while working.
Visualize Your Goals
-
Take a moment to write down and think about exactly what it is you’re after. List action steps you’ll take to get it. Create affirmations phrased in the present tense “I am now the owner of a successful bakery.” Use techniques such as treasure mapping – create a collage that features pictures evocative of what you hope to achieve. Take some time for creative visualization – spend 10 minutes in a state of deep relaxation, picturing yourself succeeding in your mind’s eye. Taking a break to focus on goals can leave you feeling reinvigorated and focused.
