1
Eat correctly to help keep your mood swings down. Avoid eating too much sugar and carbohydrates.
-
2
Breathe. Take time out from the situation, go somewhere by yourself and close your eyes. Take deep breaths in and out until you become more relaxed and ready to handle the situation.
-
3
Think of something or come up with a coping mechanism when you feel any sort of emotion welling up. According to CNN, this is known as a "personal 'stop' button" which helps you identify that you are becoming overly emotion before it happens. For example, stop yourself from becoming overly emotional by thinking of something that makes you laugh.
-
4
Walk away from the situation. If you feel yourself becoming increasingly emotional in a certain situation, take a quick five-minute walk to cool off.
-
5
Write down situations when you became emotional and study them. Write down why you became emotional, for how long and when you resolved it. This will help you map out your feelings.
-
6
Figure out what triggers you to become emotional. For example, don't listen to that song that always makes you cry or think about your dog that may have passed recently. The more you know what makes you emotional, the more apt you are to avoid these things when you need to stay in check.

7
Practice your dialogue if you know that you face a difficult situation in the near future. For example, if you are making a presentation the next day and you know an intimidating co-worker will be there, practice the presentation. Have a friend be the co-worker and pretend like he is giving you a hard time. Practice interacting with him so you are more prepared the next day.
