How to Improve Cognitive Thinking

Cognitive thinking, or "cognition," is a scientific term used to describe several mental processes including attention, memory, processing speed, visual and auditory processing as well as logic and reasoning. If you have begun to experience mental blocks or issues relating to the aforementioned processes, you may benefit from improving your cognitive thinking. While there are many costly "brain training" programs associated with improving cognitive function, you can improve your cognition using simple exercises.

Instructions

    • 1

Start taking Omega-3 supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to improve brain function, reduce memory loss and slow cognitive decline. Aim for 1,400 mg a day.

    • 2

Meditate for 20 minutes a day, at least four days a week. Research has shown that meditation significantly improves cognitive function, particularly in areas of memory and attention. Sit comfortably with your back straight, close you eyes and breathe naturally. Do not attempt to control or quiet your thoughts; observe them with passive awareness. Stand up after 20 minutes, stretch your muscles and continue your day.

    • 3

Start a daily reading regimen. Begin with an hour a day or more, depending on how much you read. One study found that after six months of a daily reading program, participants increased the volume of white matter, (the part of the brain that contains myelinated nerve fibers) in an area of the brain that governs the use of language. A Mayo Clinic study found that exercises like reading are associated with a decreased risk of mild cognitive impairment.

    • 4

Participate in social and physical activities. Walking, dancing or playing games with other people for 90 minutes a day has been shown to improve cognitive function even in seniors. Separate activities into 30 minutes blocks if needed.

    • 5

Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep has been shown to be detrimental to cognition and insight formation. Aim to sleep eight hours a night.
