How to De-Stress Before a Speech

Fear of public speaking, or speech anxiety, is actually a "fight or flight" response that our body develops in response to perceived danger. It is a feeling that very few people, no matter now seasoned they are at giving speeches in public, are able to overcome completely. In fact, being anxious before having to give a speech could actually help you prepare for it.

Practice. Although it sounds obvious, one of the best ways to de-stress before a speech is to rehearse the speech over and over until you can recall certain parts without having to make much effort. Practice in different settings, in front of friends, in front of a mirror, with a video camera and in the room where you will give the speech, if possible. Rehearsing puts your mind at ease and boosts your confidence,

Breathe. Before giving a speech, follow a deep-breathing technique to help you feel less anxious. Take a deep breath as if to fill your stomach with air and then breathe out. The technique is called "breathing through your diaphragm," and it is a slow-breathing technique that helps reduce tension in the body. You can practice this technique days, hours or minutes before your speech.

Visualize. Visualizing the audience can help you feel less anxious before you give a speech. If you imagine a humorous scenario, such as the audience in their underwear, you are likely to find the audience less threatening. Also, visualize yourself being confident, relaxed and successful before you begin and you're more likely to act that way when the time comes to deliver the speech.
