How to Heal One's Self

When you are healing from something physical or mental, you might have all the help in the world available to you. Yet if you are not ready, willing and able to heal yourself, you won't get far. Healing from within requires focus and an ability to see beyond your pain and what has happened to you to what your future could be once you overcome this challenge.

Instructions

Breathe deeply every day. This might sound like a simple process, but it's one that so many people neglect to do. Every day, several times per day, breathe in deeply all the way to your diaphragm. Slowly exhale and repeat. Do this 10 times in a row and take it slow each time. As you heal physically from an injury or mentally from an upsetting or stressful event, deep breathing can help you through the process.

Seek outside intervention. Sometimes, if you are able to accept help from others, your healing process can move much faster. If you are healing from a mental break of some sort, try counseling. If you are dealing with a physical ailment, physical therapy might be a start. You take another big step towards healing yourself if you are able to accept that you cannot do it all alone.

    • 3

Accept the pain that you've had to endure, even if you are still experiencing it. Instead of asking yourself why you've had to go through such a stressful time, accept that it happened. Then, ask yourself how you can fix it to move on. Figure out how you can ease your pain and make baby steps toward healing and regeneration. For physical pain, perhaps that means medical or holistic pain relief methods until your body heals itself; for mental pain, maybe it's a mantra you can repeat every day until you believe it and really feel better.

Take it slow. Healing -- mental or physical -- doesn't happen overnight. Be patient with yourself and the healing process and set small goals to reach. Don't give yourself a daily goal, because not every day is bound to be a good one. Set weekly goals so that you can get better little by little each day. Don't expect too much of yourself or one minor setback may be beyond discouraging.
