What Helps You Stay Awake at Night?
Staying awake at night can be a challenge for those used to a full night's sleep, but sometimes that challenge is necessary. Whether you are pulling an all-nighter to prepare for a test the next day or just planning a late night out with friends, there are things available that can help you go the long haul and get you to that morning sunrise.-
Caffeine
-
Caffeine is one of the more widely used methods of staying awake at night. Sipping coffee or even chewing on coffee beans can help when you need energy. If you don't like coffee try energy drinks that are available in many different flavors or opt for caffeinated teas. If you have a sweet tooth, chocolate-covered espresso beans are an option you can nosh on when you feel fatigue setting in.
Exercise
-
Exercise is another method of staying up and works if you don't want to use chemicals like caffeine. This doesn't mean an all out sweat-fest, but just a little activity can increase blood flow to your brain and rejuvenate you. Some ideas for activity include a brisk walk, short bike ride, 10 minutes of aerobics or something a little calmer, such as Pilates or yoga, for 10 minutes.
Food
-
While many will opt for sugary confections to get that burst of energy known as the "sugar high," this energy won't last for the long haul. Instead, opt for foods that will help your body produce real energy, such as proteins and complex carbohydrates. Examples include a hard-boiled egg, handful of almonds, toast with peanut butter or a serving of fruits or vegetables.
Music
-
Music can be just the wake-up your brain needs and can keep you focused and in the zone. Depending on your preference, you can do repetitive quick beats that will keep your brain in a steady function or change it up with some relaxing jams that will help calm your nerves in between fits of productivity. Classical music can help stimulate brain activity and is one idea to try for a late-night cram fest.
Stress
-
Stress can keep you awake and going when all else fails. While you might feel like letting go and catching some zzz's, focusing on the task at hand can help to bring you back to what you are trying to do. One way to help you focus on that task is to write small notes of encouragement to post around your home as little pick-me-ups when you feel you are losing speed.
