Ways to Deal With Jealousy

Jealousy is an emotion that we all experience. We compare ourselves to others and wish we had what they did, were as popular as they are, as attractive as they are or had a partner like theirs. Jealousy can be hard to control, but there are ways to deal with this overwhelming emotion.
  1. Communicate

    • When you're in a relationship and feeling jealous, the best way to resolve it is to tell your partner how you're feeling. Often we make others feel jealous without intending to. Tell your partner why you're feeling jealous and when these feelings of jealousy arise. Instead of attacking your partner with anger, phrase your words in "I feel" statements. Regardless of your partner's reaction, getting your feelings out in the open is the healthiest way to handle it.

    Get Help

    • If your feelings of jealousy do not fade with time, feel uncontrollable or cause a disproportionate amount of rage or sadness, you may need to seek help from a professional. Psychologists are talk therapists, and seeing one is a good way to heal psychological issues. Therapists won't judge you or tell you what to think; their job is to listen. Once your therapist helps you figure out what you're really feeling jealous about, you can move on.

    Self-examine

    • Feeling jealous about other people's looks, talents or possessions can make you feel terrible. Make a list of your own best traits, such as your personality, appearance, job, education and lifestyle. List your friends, family, health and anything else you're proud of. Whenever you begin to feel jealous of others, read your list and remind yourself what you have to be thankful for. If you have problems coming up with ideas, ask your friends what they like about you.

    Self-talk

    • When feelings of jealousy arise, take a moment to think. Consider what it is you're feeling jealous of and if it is really worth such strong feelings. Instead of feeling jealous, make a plan to reach your goals. Sometimes what we're feeling jealous over isn't something we really want once we have a minute to consider. If your jealous feelings don't fade, remind yourself of what you do have and what you have that others do not.
