How to Learn Mind Over Matter at Home

Mind over matter is based on the concept that our unconscious mind influences the world around us in subtle yet powerful ways. Learning to practice mind over matter is not a case of using willpower alone. You can practice effective techniques at home using visualization exercises and listening to hypnosis tapes.

Practice visualization techniques. The home is an ideal place to do visualization exercises, because they work best when carried out in a quiet comfortable environment. Start by relaxing and imagining yourself in a beautiful location, such as a beach or a garden. Imagine the hot sun beaming down on your body, the sound of the waves, or the scent of spring flowers. Once you feel comfortable and connected to your imaginary space, begin visualizing your dreams, using all of your senses. If you want to lose weight, for example, imagine yourself eating fresh healthy food and feeling happy, in control and full of energy. If you want to shed negative, self-defeating thoughts, imagine yourself positive and successful. Visualize the clothes you will wear, or how cool and rewarding the keys of your new Porsche will feel in your hand.

Write a wish list. Mind over matter has been linked with the law of attraction, because positive thinking and behavior is believed to influence the world around us. Write a wish list at home, in a room where you won't be interrupted. Writing a list helps you focus on your desires and prioritize what is most important. Be very specific about what you want and visualize your dreams coming true. If your wish is to live in a house near the seaside, imagine yourself walking along the beach every day, or visualize the colors on the walls of your new dream home and the Juliet balcony where you can enjoy the view.

Listen to hypnosis tapes. Unconscious beliefs can sabotage our lives. Someone who believes he can never be successful may never have the confidence to try. Reprogram the unconscious mind with hypnosis; it can help people curb many addictive behaviors and learn to do what seems impossible -- like stop smoking or lose weight -- without relying on willpower alone.

Create a regular routine. Sticking to a regular routine for demanding or stressful tasks helps to overcome mental resistance and reduces the stress associated with difficult tasks. Someone who procrastinates about doing repetitive domestic chores, for example, could force herself to do them at the same time every day until it becomes a habit.
