Healthy Skills for Managing Stress

Managing and relieving stress helps people focus more on what needs to be accomplished or relax more at the end of the day. Healthy stress management techniques assist you in coping with and overcoming daily stresses. Completing small tasks throughout your day to help manage stress levels will make it so that you can better function in your work and home environments.
  1. Exercise

    • Spend your work break stretching and moving your body. Walk around your desk for a few minutes, and stand up to talk on the phone. Moving your body during the day helps relieve pent-up stress in your muscles and keeps your muscles from cramping up or getting sore, which can cause more stress.

    Locate the Stress Source

    • Find out what is causing you the most stress, and figure out a way to tackle it. If you break down a task into smaller jobs to complete, it might take away the overwhelming stress you have about the overall project. Delegate some of the tasks until you have completed your assignments if you have coworkers who are willing to help you. Talk to your supervisor, and explain that the task needs to be broken down into manageable chunks. This will help relive some of the stress so that you can focus on doing your work.

    Create Your Own Fun

    • Give yourself mini-breaks while you are working so that you have something to look forward to. Every time you complete part of a project, take the time to reward yourself. Make time for family and friends after the workday is done so you can spend time doing fun activities and not concentrating on work when you are away from the office.

    Unlearn Unhealthy Behavior

    • Write down a list of how you currently deal with stress, and identify the things you do that are actually bad for you, like smoking or drinking to much caffeine. Slowly start to change the unhealthy habits into good habits. Instead of having a smoke break, go for a walk with a friend. Instead of having another cup of coffee, reach for a different beverage that you enjoy --- or just drink water instead of coffee.
