Ways to Calm Yourself During Clarinet Auditions
Sweaty palms and a pounding heart are familiar to anyone who's ever auditioned for something she really wanted. During clarinet auditions, however, it's essential to stay calm and focused. With practice, preparation and a few relaxation techniques, you'll be on your way to a dazzling, nerve-free performance.-
Mental Techniques
-
Avoid the word "need" in your thoughts during the audition. "Need" indicates desperation, so substitute "want." Focus on your playing, not the outcome. If your thoughts are on winning or being chosen, they're not on performing well in the present. Think positively; remind yourself that you are a talented and capable clarinet player. Don't review scales or arpeggios in your head or frantically go over sheet music. Never allow yourself to become disheartened by the number of competitors. Remember that you are in full control of your performance, thoughts and behavior. Finally, pay attention to the current clarinet player auditioning and make an effort to genuinely enjoy the music without critique or comparison.
Physical Techniques
-
Nervousness is often accompanied by shallow, rapid breathing, which only exacerbates feelings of fear and worry. Force yourself to breathe deeply and exhale completely. Stop tapping your foot or finger and don't wiggle your jaw or bounce your knee. Keep still. Close your eyes an rub your temples slowly to release tension in the head. If possible, speak to other clarinet players about unrelated topics; discussing weekend or vacation plans will keep your mind on something enjoyable.
Preparation
-
Carefully read the audition requirements a few weeks in advance and ask questions if you need clarification. If you have a choice of pieces, consider them carefully and choose the one that you and your music coach believe best showcases your talent. Make a practice schedule and stick to it. Record yourself and be willing to critique your performance. The night before, arrange your clothing and personal effects so that you can dress quickly and go. Arrive at the audition with your clarinet clean, shined and in its case, along with any necessary sheet music.
During Your Audition
-
When the big moment comes don't panic or rush to the stage. Walk purposefully to the audition area. Clear your throat, speak deferentially to the judges and begin when instructed. You may be cut off mid-piece, but don't let it bother you (in all likelihood, the judges will want to hear several samples of your playing). Keep your mind on the music---not on playing perfectly---and let the music fill your thoughts. If you make a mistake, do not acknowledge it. Continue playing until told to stop.
