Strategies for Managing Stress

An old saying is that you should feel lucky to be stressed, because if you aren't stressed out you are dead. Most of us would like to reduce the amount of stress in our lives. Although you might not be able to eliminate stress in your daily life, learning to effectively manage it can make the days (and nights) much easier to handle.
  1. Exercise

    • Exercise is beneficial for the body and mind.

Physical activity does more than improve your physique. Engaging in 30 minutes of exercise three times a week can help relieve stress and tension. Set aside time in the day or week to do something physical and follow through on the commitment. Bike riding, walking or taking an aerobics class can release pent-up emotions that can turn into stressful feelings.

    Social Activities

    • Time with friends can help you forget about stress.

Having a network outside of work and home is important to managing stress. Connecting with positive people can improve your outlook on life. It helps to get the opinion and insight of others during times of stress, as a friend can point out a benefit you might have overlooked.

Plan a regular girls' or guys' night out and stick to it. Try to keep the activity upbeat -- don't just get together to lament about your problems (although a good gripe session every now and then won't hurt). Bowling, shopping or dinner can help you focus on things other than stress.

    Music or Art

    • Music can soothe away stress.

Listening to music, drawing a picture or reading an inspirational poem can be a powerful stress relief. Choose reflective music, close your eyes and let your mind drift with the beat. Channel your emotions into a painting or drawing and let go of stressful situations.

Depending on your life and location, you can browse an art museum or sip coffee at an outdoor cafe while listening to a jazz band. However, Mozart on the computer or a Fats Domino CD can be just as effective.

    Use Your Senses

    • Candle light can soothe your stressed out senses.

Utilize your five senses to effectively manage stress. Pet your dog's soft fur, smell the fresh air or take a sip of diet soda. Or light some candles, run a warm bath and soak in the tub. The idea is to shift your senses from the stressful to the soothing.

Gently massage your head or shoulders to reduce stress-related muscle tension. Or squeeze a foam or rubber ball in your hand. Focus on using each of your five senses when engaging in any activity for the best results.

    Relaxation/Meditation

    • Yoga is one way to manage your stress.

Deep breathing exercises can do wonders for a stressed out mind and body. Focus on filling and emptying your lungs with each breath. Meditation can help you block out the stress of your environment. Try picturing white in your mind while breathing and allow all the noise and movement around you to slowly dissipate.

Yoga is one way to combine relaxation and meditation techniques. Yoga brings your senses into play, helps you to regain focus and strengthens your body with deliberate exercise moves. Practice at home or take a friend to a local class.
