1
Get the facts. In order to manage conflict situations, it is important to thoroughly understand the situation. Ask questions of each party involved. To lessen the possibility of conflicting stories, question parties when everyone involved is present. Someone is more likely to leave out facts or reveal a portion of the facts when discussing the matter without having everyone there.
-
2
Use active/reflective listening. Try to understand how each person sees himself in the situation. Use statements like, "I follow you," "I'm with you" or "I understand." Maintain an open mind. Ask questions. Repeat back some of what the person says. The listener should avoid expressing agreement or disagreement. This approach encourages less defensiveness. If the listener is angry or irritated, he should so while remaining calm during the discussion.
-
3
Refrain from interrupting the speaker, changing the subject or making up your mind before listening to all involved parties. Avoid defensive posturing, name calling, sarcasm, blaming and inflexibility.
-
4
Define the problem through discussion. All parties should agree on the problem. Brainstorm possible solutions with all parties involved. Mutually agree on possible solutions. Implement solutions while maintaining open communication.
