List of Stress Relievers

You are faced with stressors on a daily basis. As these stressors accumulate and begin to weigh heavily, feelings of helplessness and depression can develop. For this reason, it's important to take the time to focus on your well-being by engaging in stress-reducing activities. So go ahead, focus on you, have some fun and reduce your stress. You owe it to yourself and your loved ones.
  1. Meditate

    • Meditation has been found to reduce muscle tension, decrease heart rate, slow breathing and produce alpha waves --- brain waves associated with a resting state. There are many different forms of meditation; however, they can all be organized into two separate categories: focused meditation and open meditation. In focused meditation, the individual focuses all of his attention on a focal point, such as an object, word, sound, phrase or breathing pattern. When he notices his attention drifting from the focal point, he makes a conscious effort to draw his attention back. The goal is to essentially limit awareness of all thoughts, feelings and environmental factors. In open meditation --- also referred to as mindful meditation --- the individual is focused on existing in the present moment. Her attention is not focused on any one thing, but rather, everything that is going on around her and within her. She does not think about the past or future but does attend to any thoughts or feelings that have to do with the present moment.

    Engage in Physical Activity

    • Physical activity has been found to improve mood, clear one's mind and reduce anxiety and stress. The effects are magnified when the physical activity is one that is highly enjoyed by the individual. If you go to the gym on a daily basis but dislike going, you will only increase your feelings of stress. Try to engage in activities you enjoy, such as nature walks, swimming, sports, dancing, bike riding or anything else that gets your body moving, even at a moderate pace. It takes as little as ten minutes of physical activity to reap its stress-reducing benefits.

    Pamper Yourself

    • A spa is a great way to reduce stress. Gentle music, relaxing treatments and pleasant aromas all help to decrease heart rate and produce a sense of calm. Don't worry if you don't have the time or money to visit a spa; you can create the same feelings in the comfort of your home. Play some relaxing music, burn incense or scented candles, dim the lights and put on loose, comfortable clothing. If you have a partner or close friend, you can take turns giving each other massages. If not, you can give yourself a hand, arm, leg and foot massage using lotions or oils in your favorite sent. Focus on the moment and don't let yourself think about the past or future.

    Have Some Fun!

    • Go for dinner with your friends, have a movie and popcorn night in your pajamas, host a party or go to an amusement park --- anything you find pleasurable. Not only do feelings of happiness reduce feelings of anxiety and stress, but they clear the mind and make life's troubles seem more manageable.
