How to Think Clearer

People's brains are always working. Even when we sleep, we are dreaming. Likewise, according to author Randy Park, founder of Decision Advancement, "We're always thinking. Even in those moments when we say, 'Oh I wasn't thinking,' what we really mean is we weren't thinking very well."

A person's brain always kicks in when he laughs at a joke, blinks, memorizes addresses, reads aloud or recalls a memory. Some people wish they could focus on a single activity, but with so many thoughts flooding their minds, focusing on something becomes extremely difficult; however, there are things you can do to think clearer, to concentrate and have healthier mind.

Relax yourself. According to the National Health Service of the United Kingdom, "Relaxation can help to relieve the symptoms of stress." One of the reasons why people cannot think clearly is due to stress; therefore, by reducing the stress, you will be able to think clearer. Try relaxation activities such as yoga, swimming, walking in natural surroundings and listening to or playing music. (See the links in Resources.)

Exercise. The Daily Telegraph in London reports that, "Doing just 20 minutes of housework or gardening every week is enough to boost mental health and reduce stress." And, if you reduce your psychological distress, you will be able to think clearer. You could try doing things like redecorating a room, watering the plants,\ and vacuum cleaning. Alternatively, you could go to the gym, join aerobics classes or just exercise at home.

Solve your problems. People often get stressed about simple things such as paying the bills, going shopping, buying a gift and work matters. By taking care of anything that needs to be done (one task at a time), you will reduce stress. You can do this by writing a list of all the things you need to do. Keep the list visible, so that you do not stress about remembering to check it. Put it on the refrigerator, or on your work desk, and each time you get something done, check it off.

Be optimistic. Remember that problems have solutions. Do not be anxious about what is going to happen tomorrow; instead, focus on what is presented to you today. Doing this will help you to focus on a specific situation, and your mind will clear.

Try something different. According to Professor Kathy Sykes on BBC Headroom, "Getting out of our daily routines or away from the stress in our lives--even for short periods of time--can make all the difference and can give us just enough space to see things differently." You could go on a holiday, take some time off work or spend some time with your friends.
