Handling Anger
-
1
Make a conscious choice on how you will react to a situation that you know has the potential to "push your buttons." Reacting to anger and stress are two sides to the same coin. According to Tony Fiore, a psychologist and anger management specialist on the Anger Coach website, the first step is recognizing that you are angry. Being aware is being alert. If you know you are about to become angry or stressed, it is easier to prevent the situation from escalating. Try to respond to the situation instead of reacting to it.

2
Communicate in an effective manner. Fiore states that poor communication often leads to conflict and misunderstanding. Be reflective about what you say before you say it. Organizing your thoughts in a potentially volatile situation will help you to de-stress and avoid an angry situation. Try taking a deep breath and relaxing your muscles.

Relax by taking a time out. The University of Eastern Michigan's Health Services Department recommends taking mini-breaks throughout the day. Combine the breaks with relaxation exercises by "drooping" the shoulder muscles and practicing deep breathing. Visualize yourself in a restful place.

4
Exercise as part of your routine. Physical exercise has been shown to provide relief from stress and reduce anger. Do whatever feels right for you. It may be something as simple as taking a walk or riding a bicycle.

5
Eat right. A healthy diet provides energy to get through the day. The University of Eastern Michigan Health Services Department also recommends staying away from non-prescription medications and limiting your intake of alcoholic beverages. Coffee, or other caffeinated drinks also can contribute to stress and increase a tendency to incite anger.

6
Balance your work and social lives. Try to cultivate positive relationships. Good friends and social activities provide for a well-rounded existence. Sharing thoughts and emotions with others is good for you.
-
7
Sleep in a cool, dark room. Try to go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time every day. Sleep is nature's way of regenerating the body and the mind.
