Uses of Stress Balls

Stress balls are some of the most inexpensive tools available to deal with the stresses found at work, in the home and elsewhere. These items are actually small toys that normally are made of foam, rubber or similar compounds. They are easy to carry and can be tucked into purses, briefcases and desk drawers. The simple act of squeezing a stress ball with your hands and fingers can be an effective way not only to relieve stress, but also to exercise your fingers, hands, wrists and forearms.
  1. Finding Stress Balls

    • Stress balls can be purchased at many retail locations, including dollar stores, drug stores and other outlets. They may be found in the toy department or may be located among health-care products. Stress balls come in shapes other than balls, too, but the ball is the most common design. Stress balls can be made at home, as well, using a balloon and baking soda or corn starch (see "Resources").

    Using Stress Balls

    • There are no secrets to using a stress ball. Simply squeeze the ball with the hands and fingers, alternating hands if you have just one stress ball. Don't squeeze too tightly, and pay attention to your breathing as you squeeze the stress ball. Try to slow your breathing as you manipulate the stress ball. People under stress sometimes crack their knuckles, drum with their fingers on their table or desk or simply twist their hands. Working with a stress ball is a positive and healthy outlet for relieving some of this pressure.

    Doing More

    • Simple tasks can be accomplished while using a stress ball. Try keeping it in one hand and squeezing it while making phone calls or jotting down notes. Toss a stress ball from hand to hand as you sit at your workspace. The act of squeezing a stress ball helps relax the muscles and improves blood flow to the fingers, hands and wrists. Do not, however, use a stress ball while driving.
