How to Increase Mental Sharpness

Many people believe that losing mental abilities comes with the territory of getting older, but studies show it doesn’t have to be that way. You can increase your mental sharpness with a variety of techniques that require interaction and activity. Best of all, you can boost your mind without spending much more than time and effort, leaving your pocketbook intact.
  1. Stay Active

    • Researchers at the Mayo Clinic discovered that aerobic exercise like ping pong, running and swimming can boost brain health and even slow down the effects of dementia and other cognitive impairment disorders. Exercise can also lift your spirits and fight off the specter of depression, which can dull the mind. An active body often directly correlates to a sharper mind. Dr. Rodolfo Savica, a neurologist with the Mayo Clinic, recommends 30 minutes of this activity a day, five times a week.

    Play Games

    • Do crossword puzzles, solve the Sudoku in the newspaper, or tackle a video game that requires thought and problem-solving. Recently, UCLA researchers discovered that older folks can improve language comprehension and memory by regularly using a “brain fitness” program. These memory training games force people to use their minds and improve cognitive skills. A variety of video games are available for every device, from the Nintendo DS to the iPad or your desktop computer.

    Interact With Others

    • Social activity keeps your brain engaged, fights depression and improves your mood. Sharing your experience through mentoring means you exchange ideas and take in new information, and there are volunteer opportunities in every community through churches, schools, shelters and other non-profit organizations. Keep in touch with old friends, make new ones and share new adventures like traveling to somewhere you’ve never been before or even just trying a new restaurant.

    Drop Shortcuts

    • In today’s world, you have speed dial, voice activation and computer icons so you don’t have to remember the details. Cut out some of those shortcuts by writing down phone numbers and memorizing them instead of relying on speed dial, or learn where a computer file is kept on the hard drive instead of just clicking on the icon. Not only will it keep your mind sharp, you won’t suffer as much if you lose your phone. If you write down something you want to remember, the action boosts your chances of remembering it. Keep a notebook handy and refer to it often as you memorize the names, dates, numbers and other information you should know on a daily basis.

    Improve Your Outlook

    • It's easy to become caught up in worry and stress. Positive thinking and an overall sense of happiness can have a boosting effect on your mental sharpness. Learn to relax with meditation, yoga or your favorite hobby and give your mind some positive input. If you avoid unnecessary stress and look for the brighter side, your brain will reciprocate with better comprehension, more memory and the potential for a longer life.
