Remedies for Irritability

Irritability can be caused by outside social influences, such as stresses at work, school or in the family. According to the New York Times Health Guide, irritability is the brain's reaction to excessive stimuli. While irritability is not a symptom for a specific condition, its presence can point to the beginning signs of a serious illness. If irritability lasts for over a seven days, and worsens without any other symptoms, contact a medical professional immediately.
  1. Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) Supplement

    • Gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA, is an amino acid that works as a neurotransmitter in the brain to increase relaxation and prevent over-exciting. By stimulating the release of endorphins and subduing nerve ending signals, this supplement works with body as a natural tranquilizer, such as Valium. By increasing relaxation it reduces stress-related irritability and it has shown to be beneficial towards PMS-induced irritability.

      To treat irritability and stress, consume 250 mg of GABA three times per day. This supplement is available in powder and pill form, however, consuming the powder allows for faster and easier absorption into the body. Mix each dosage with 3 oz. of water or juice and stir for 30 seconds. If you are on other medications, consult your physician prior to taking this supplement to ensure interactions will not happen.

    Chamomile Tea

    • Chamomile contains a high level of antioxidants as well as essential oils that work to relax muscles and reduce the amount of free radicals within the system. Chamomile tea is effective when used to treat irritability that is caused by bodily fatigue as well as mental anxiety and depression. The mild sedative properties within chamomile calm the mind and promote general relaxation.

      To make chamomile tea, purchase fresh or dried chamomile flowers. Visiting the local flower nursery will allow you to find fresh chamomile flowers; however, dried flowers can be purchased at herbal shops. For fresh flowers, rinse the 3 tsp. worth of chamomile flowers in cold water, and bring 1 cup of water to a rolling boil. Once the water begins to boil, place the 3 tsp. of chamomile flowers into the water and allow the tea to steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain the flowers out of the tea and sweeten with pure honey or agave nectar.

    Valerian Root

    • Irritability can be caused by the lack of normal sleeping patterns, or insomnia. The body repairs itself, both physically and mentally, during sleep thus if sleep is deprived stress, anxiety and irritability levels can increase. Valerian root has been utilized for its ability to improve not only the quality of sleep, but also reducing the amount of time it takes to reach REM sleep.

      To consume, take 450 mg with 8 oz. of water every night before going to bed. Valerian root is available in powder and tablet forms, however, either form works in the same manner. This herb has very limited side effects and promotes healthier sleep without causing unwanted grogginess throughout the day.
