Definition of Goal Setting

Industrial and organizational psychology heavily relies upon the use of goal setting. With proper goal setting, an objective no longer seems out of reach to the pursuer. Goal setting involves a defined and concentrated effort to complete an objective. Individuals may perform goal setting for themselves or for others to direct specific people or groups of people.
  1. Specific

    • In order to set a goal you must know very specifically what your objective or planned outcome is.

    Activity

    • Goal setting refines activities. Only those actions that are relevant to the objective are focused on to achieve the set goals.

    Clear Expectations

    • In goal setting the participant or participants are made completely aware of the expectations placed upon them. This may include measured steps along the way to the final objective.

    Motivation

    • Goal setting includes a complete awareness as to the reason for reaching the goal, or the motivation. Without motivation, goal setting is most often ineffective.

    Time Target

    • A planned time for completion or acquisition of the goal being worked toward must be noted for the goal to be exact.
