How to Keep Hands Away From Face

Touching your face with unclean hands can cause pimples, spread germs and even cause pink-eye when your infectious hand works its way up to your eyes. Learning how to control your impulses and keep your hands away from your face is a good way to stop nervous habits and subconscious movement and look more composed and confident.

Instructions

    • 1

Become acutely aware of your movements. By relaxing and focusing on one body part at a time, you can begin to become aware of your body. Try increasing the amount of time you remain aware and then add movement. Eventually, you should be catching your hand moving toward your face before it gets there as you remain aware.

    • 2

Videotape yourself or have a friend videotape you to discover your nervous and habitual movements. Ask your friends to monitor your hand movement and correct you when you subconsciously touch your face.

    • 3

Resolve to stop leaning your chin and your hand when your neck is tired. Work at developing better posture or lean your head on a wall or other structure if you're tired and need support.

    • 4

Practice an alternative to touching your face like clasping your hands together or grabbing your leg whenever you're tempted. Over time, as you self-correct, your hands will have a new place to drift to when you're bored or nervous.
