How to Let Go of Unachievable Goals

Having goals, even unachievable ones, seems like the most important thing in the world. That may not be true. Being able to see when your goals are unachievable, and being able to let go of them, may actually be the healthiest thing for you and can allow you to dream up other goals for the future.

Instructions

    • 1

Realize that giving up on a goal that is clearly unachievable is not defeat. You can nurture and prod a business for years, but if it is failing, there is usually nothing you can do to revive it. Accept it as fact, and not failure, and you can let go.

    • 2

Look at quitting as taking a different path. If the idea of quitting anything makes your blood boil, then just look at it a different way in order to give yourself permission to let go of an unattainable goal.

    • 3

Mourn the loss. Especially if this goal has been with you for a long time. Take the time to grieve the fact that the goal is not longer with you.

    • 4

Understand that the outrageous success stories are rare. There are many out there who have invented the next big thing and made millions, but they are lucky and their stories are rare.

    • 5

Let go of unachievable goals by setting new ones. Life tends to lead us to outcomes we never saw coming, so when you must close one door leave the path open for other goals to be made. Remember, you are giving up a goal, not life.
