How to Wait for What You Want

Patience may be a virtue, but it isn't always easy to wait when you're anticipating an important event or something you really want. Employ these simple strategies to help the days pass with less stress until the big occasion arrives.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep yourself distracted with other tasks. Immerse yourself in a hobby, help around the house, wash your car or read one book after another, for example. If you're not counting the days until the special event, you'll be able to relax and the time will pass more quickly.

    • 2

Plan a special activity or treat for each day that you have to wait. If you schedule lunches with friends, watch favorite movies, cook delicious meals or window shop at the mall, you'll be having too much fun to be impatient.

    • 3

Make a checklist to ensure you'll be prepared when the special day arrives. If you're eager for a new job to start, list all of the clothing and supplies you'll need for your first day. If you're waiting impatiently for an impending vacation, write down everything you'll need to pack. You'll still be thinking of the upcoming event, but at least you'll be doing something productive.

    • 4

Use the time to decide if whatever you're waiting for is truly what you want. If you've got three months to go before you receive a video game console for your birthday, for instance, take the time to research other units and games to be sure you're asking for the one you'll enjoy the most.

    • 5

Realize that training yourself to be patient is an important skill that you'll use everyday. Learning to remain calm while waiting for your birthday, promotion or Internet order to arrive in the mail may help you be more tolerant when you wait in line at the bank, in a traffic jam or experience similar trying times.
