1
Create specific goals. You don't need a clear-cut plan--if you had one, you probably wouldn't be using a life coach. Keep in mind that life coaches are people, not mind readers. "Getting in shape" is a lot more specific than "make my life better," and it will lead to better results.

2
Research your options. The yellow pages and Internet might be a good way to start, but don't pick a coach based solely on this. Seek out recommendations from friends or colleagues who have used life coaches. In some cases, your doctor may be able to recommend a reputable coach.

3
Consult with the life coach. Before you commit to hiring a life coach, discuss your goals and his methods. Ask questions to make sure the coach is a good fit for your personality, lifestyle and goals.
-
4
Do your homework. Your life coach will recommend specific steps to help you achieve your goals, and there is work involved. If you know you will have trouble completing the work your coach recommends, let her know so she can present alternatives.

Keep an open mind as you work with your life coach. Life coaches are trained to help their clients reach their full potential and find the best way for them to achieve their goals. Some of their recommendations might seem ineffective until you try them--and then might seem like the best thing you could have done.
