The Effects of Grief

Grief can have extreme effects on the human psyche. Grief from traumatic loss or negative news is potentially catastrophic. The effects of grief manifest themselves in various ways. While the effects of grief are normal -- even healthy as the process evolves -- extreme difficulties or prolonged symptoms may be an indicator that a person needs professional help.
  1. Physical Effects

    • Not all bereaved individuals will display all of the physical effects of grief. Crying and sighing are very prevalent effects. Many people become lethargic and complain of fatigue. Some people experience sleeplessness, while others sleep constantly. Some individuals lose their appetite, while others overindulge in food. Individuals may abuse alcohol and abuse recreational and prescription drugs.

    Emotional Effects

    • Sadness and pining for what was lost are some of the emotional effects of grief. Some people develop feelings of guilt or anger. Some people experience mild anxiety, while others experience very severe anxiety. Grieving individuals may express some or all of these feelings. Some may speak of these feelings incessantly, while others will choose to suffer in silence.

    Social Efffects

    • The social effects of grief often include a bereaved person's pulling away from friends and family. Sometimes the opposite can occur, and the grieving individual will express a strong desire to not be left alone. Grieving persons might have mood swings and intense emotions, which they might direct at friends and family. Moreover, grieving persons might lose interest in social activities that they normally engaged in.

    Spiritual Effects

    • Grieving individuals may demonstrate a sudden interest in spiritual matters. This may include increased interest in religion or spiritual texts or a newfound desire to participate in religious services. In some cases, the bereaved will begin to openly question and challenge their spiritual beliefs or that of others.
