Things to Do When You Feel Overwhelmed

Many things can cause a person to feel overwhelmed, such as working too much at a job or taking on too many responsibilities at home. Someone who is overwhelmed may feel exhausted and allow the smallest things to irritate her. If you feel overwhelmed, take the proper steps to relieve your stress.
  1. Do a Relaxing Activity

    • Do a relaxing activity when you wake up every morning. For example, write in your journal about how you are feeling. Do not hold anything back because no one but you has to read it. Another helpful morning ritual is doing light exercise, such as yoga or pilates.

    Try a Fun Activity

    • Participate in a fun activity. Take an art class at your local community center or go for a bike ride outside. Spend time with your friends at social gatherings. Do not be afraid to try something new, such as horseback riding or skiing. Partaking in fun activities may help take your mind off the stress in your life.

    Practice Saying No

    • Do not be afraid to say "no." If you can't take on another task, do not worry about disappointing anyone. Instead, say that you have a heavy workload already, and you don't want to burn yourself out by taking on another project.

    Confide in a Loved One

    • Talk to a close family member or friend. Tell him how certain things in your life have been overwhelming you. Sometimes sharing your feelings with a loved one can ease some of the stress in your life. He may even offer you advice on how to manage your stress. If you don't feel comfortable talking to a friend or family member, consult with a therapist. A licensed therapist can suggest healthy ways to manage your stress.

    Take Care of Yourself

    • Nourish your body. Eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and get plenty of sleep. When you take care of yourself physically, you will feel better mentally. If you are well-rested and energized, you can handle all of life's challenges.

    Give Yourself a Pep Talk

    • Talk to yourself. When it feels like stress is taking over, take a moment to say positive things to yourself. Tell yourself that you are a smart person and that you can do anything you set your mind to. Avoid being negative because you will only increase your stress.
