How to Stop Blushing When I'm Embarrassed

Blushing can be a nightmare for the sufferer but the irony is that it may hardly be noticed by others. Even if they do notice, many people think blushing is endearing and charming and will certainly not think any the less of you for it. However, knowing this might not be much consolation if you really hate it and want to stop. Blushing is an unconscious physiological response. This means that it is largely outside of a person's control, a bit like sneezing. However, there are techniques that you can use, both to lessen the blushing and reduce its impact on your life.

Instructions

Draw attention to it. This might sound strange and counter-intuitive, but it is a good way of stopping your embarrassment in its tracks. It reduces the power of the blush and gives you control. If you make a light-hearted remark, such as, "Oh, I thought I'd stopped blushing," this defuses the situation. As blushing is related in your case to anxiety, the more you build it up and worry about it, the more likely it is to happen.

Pay attention to your overall physical and psychological state. Some people develop a high color when they are uncomfortably hot or even when they eat particularly spicy food. Be aware of any triggers to your blushing. Learn relaxation techniques, particularly focusing on breathing. Yoga classes can be very helpful. You can then use these techniques in embarrassing situations to calm yourself. Focusing on breathing correctly will also distract you and may prevent blushing.

Use visualization techniques. If you have to give a presentation at work, for instance, imagine what this will feel like. You may feel your heart racing and other symptoms of mounting anxiety as you visualize this event. Now imagine yourself being cool and calm in this situation. Repeat this several times as you prepare for the actual event.
