How to Make Your Own Heavy Bag Stand

Heavy bags are great for martial arts training, traditional boxing and stress relief. They are often filled with a mixture of sand and sawdust, or water. This makes them very heavy, and requires them to be supported by a sturdy stand. Heavy bag stands must not only support the weight of the heavy bag, but they must also be able to withstand horizontal stress from being punched or kicked. Treated construction lumber will work well for heavy bag stands. When they are confined to the ground by concrete, they can last for a number of years.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the 120-inch board flat, and position the 40-inch board perpendicularly against the end of it. The end of the 40-inch board should be flush with one of the sides of the 120-inch board. Screw four 8-inch screws through the 40-inch board, so they enter the end of the 120-inch board. Space the screws 2 inches apart so they form an outline of a 2-by-2-inch square.

    • 2

Cut the ends of the 30-inch board at a 45-degree angle using your miter saw. The total length of the board should not be affected, and when it lays flat on its longest side, it should resemble a trapezoid shape. This is the support board for your heavy bag stand.

    • 3

Position the support board between the 120-inch board and the 40-inch board so the ends that were cut rest flat against each of the boards. Screw two 8-inch screws through each end of this board and into the 40-inch board and the 120-inch board. Both pair of screws should enter the 40-inch and 120-inch boards perpendicularly.

    • 4

Drill a 1-inch hole through the 40-inch board 3 inches away from the end that is opposite the 120-inch board. The hole should be parallel with the 120-inch board. Place the eye-bolt through the hole with a washer on the opposite side of the eye-hole, and screw the nut on. The eye-hole must be on the same side as the 120-inch board.

    • 5

Screw the 10-inch boards to the 120-inch board and the 40-inch board, one on each side of the stand. They should be parallel, with their ends flush with the top edge of the 40-inch board. Their 4-inch sides should be parallel with the 40-inch sides of the 40-inch board.

    • 6

Use your post-hole-digger to dig a 2-feet deep hole that is 12 inches wide. Mix your cement with water according to the instructions provided. Place the open end of the 120-inch board in the hole and pour the cement around it. Use your level to position it vertically. Let the cement dry according to the instructions.

    • 7

Use the hardware that came with your heavy bag to attach it to the eye-bolt.
