How to Get the Right Focus

It's easy to get distracted by the little things in life. Just when you think you've got the right focus and can finally focus on the things that are really important to you, something happens and you're completely thrown off. You can't plan for every eventuality, but you also shouldn't allow every eventuality to throw you off course. Sometimes, it's inevitable that you'll lose your course, such as when a loved one dies, you become ill or any number of possible, extremely stressful circumstances. However, in normal day-to-day life, getting the right focus is not as hard as it sounds.

Instructions

    • 1

Set clear, well-defined goals for your life. According to Life Optimizer, you should have a broad perspective, with goals for the long-term, as well as a short-term perspective, such as goals you want to accomplish within the next few days or weeks. Having clear-cut goals helps you to define the tasks you want to focus on.

    • 2

Write down your goals, either in a journal or in a place where you'll frequently see them. Periodic exposure to your goal list can help to keep you focused and motivated.

    • 3

Start a meditation program. Having at least 30 minutes a day to unwind, clear out the mental clutter and become more mindful can improve your focus and help you to keep your focus on the "right" things. According to author Jonathan C. Smith in his book, "Relaxation, Meditation and Mindfulness," meditation is one of the most direct ways of cultivating sustained focus.

    • 4

Write in a journal every day. Writing down your thoughts, emotions and experiences helps to clear out useless mental clutter that can interfere with your focus, goals and creativity. Journaling can also help you to develop insight and gain a clearer perspective.

    • 5

Limit the time you spend on distractions. It's hard to maintain the right focus if you find yourself doodling or checking Facebook every five minutes. There's nothing wrong with occasional distractions, but they shouldn't be the focus of your day.

    • 6

Give yourself time to relax. You don't need to be a workhorse to keep your focus. In fact, too much work and strain can impede goal accomplishment, because you never get a chance to rest. Make sure you get enough sleep. Set aside some time every day to focus on the things that are important, such as your relationships or your spiritual well-being.
