How Does Loss of Employment Affect Health?

According to Time Magazine, employment loss can affect health. Both physical and physiological symptoms can be triggered, and depression that can come after a job loss creates some of these symptoms.
  1. Statistics

    • Statistics studied by Kate Scully claim that eighty percent of people that did not previously suffer from any health problems began having new health problems triggered after losing a job. Blue-collar workers are statistically affected more physically and mentally by job loss.

    Health Problems

    • Per the Time report, symptoms triggered after losing a job could range from increases in diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. People had health issues before losing their jobs reported increases in high blood pressure, arthritis and various cardiovascular problems. Depression can hit after losing a job and effects can include chronic joint pain, tiredness, appetite change, back pain, gastrointestinal problems and psycho motor activity changes.

    Significance

    • Research showed that depression and stress are physically harmful. According to Time, anxiety can raise hormone levels that create inflammation and wear the body down, thus making it more vulnerable to stroke and heart disease. Time also says that eating a healthy diet and exercise can help reduce some of the effects from employment-loss related stress.
