Six Steps to Living in the Moment
-
Place Your Attention in the Present
-
Too many people are busy thinking about what has happened in the past or what is going to happen in the future instead of focusing on what is going on right now. Putting your attention in present time is a concept emphasized continuously in many Eastern religions and philosophies. The only time you have is right now. Trying to keep your focus on what you are currently doing or to whom you are currently speaking is one way to start living in the moment.
Be Unselfconscious
-
Self-consciousness prevents many people from doing things they really want to do. They may wish they could act out, but they feel silly, or they feel like they can't, or their parents told them they weren't capable--whatever the reason, they don't even try. Feelings of self-consciousness hold you back. In order to live in the moment, you should stop thinking about what you are doing and just do it.
Accept Pain
-
Acceptance is a key factor in living in the moment. If something is painful, you may struggle with it or try with all your might to avoid it. However, the chances may be that your struggling is only causing you more pain. Trying to accept what is in your life right now, even if it is negative or painful, will help you to live in the moment instead of struggling against it.
Stop Rushing
-
Your life may seem very hectic and crazy at times. It seems like everyone is always rushing around with something important to do or someone important to meet. This constant, frenzied pace of life prevents you from living in the moment because you are always concerned with what is going to happen next. Don't overbook your schedule, and make sure you take time for the things that are important, such as your family and friends.
Appreciate the Little Things
-
Develop a feeling of gratitude for the little things in your life. These might be things you often overlook, whether it's a smile and a hug from your husband before he leaves for work or the aroma of flowers that have just started blooming in springtime. Make a list of the things you are grateful for, and try to cultivate a feeling of being mindful, aware and appreciative when you come across them.
Forget Time
-
If you've ever been truly absorbed in a task, you may completely lose track of time. This may happen to you when you're doing something you absolutely love to do. In order to live in the moment, it's important to stop worrying about time and just engage in the activity you are performing as fully as possible
