At Risk
-
You are at risk for burnout if you work in one of the helping professions. If your job is monotonous and boring, you are at risk. When you feel you have little or no control over your work or you are the type of person who tries to be all things to all people, you are probably headed for burnout. If you derive your identity completely from your work and not from your personal life, balance is lacking, and this can contribute to burnout.
Other Contributors to Burnout
-
Burnout can be the result of "chaos" at your workplace. If your work environment is dysfunctional and bullying goes on, or some other kind of inappropriate behavior is occurring, this can cause burnout. If you have the wrong job and it doesn't suit your skills, or you can't control anything about your job, your assignments or the shift you work, this can lead to burnout.
Symptoms
-
Symptoms of burnout can manifest in disillusionment, lack of joy, irritability and impatience, lack of energy and motivation, sarcasm and cynicism on your part, change in sleep and eating habits, headaches, lower back pain and neck pain. These can lead to weight gain or loss, insomnia, fatigue and substance abuse.
Anxiety
-
You can experience work-related anxiety for a lot of reasons. If you are worried about keeping your job, this causes an individual to be anxious. If you don't feel as though you totally grasp what it is you are supposed to be doing on the job, this causes worry and anxiety. When a person has got too much to do and to do little time to do it, this causes anxiety.
