Mood Swing Disease
Mood swing disease is a mental disorder in which a sufferer experiences dramatic shifts in mood. Mood swings can happen to anyone, but an individual with mood swings that do not match the situation, occur without warning and are uncontrollable can potentially disable sufferers. Mood swings are not necessarily a sufferer's fault and may be the result of environmental factors. Because of this, mood swing disease can be treated.-
Cause
-
Mood swings occur naturally when events cause sudden changes in emotion. However, mood swings can be caused by sudden changes in hormones, anemia caused by a lack of iron, diets high in sugar or low in fresh fruit, sleep deprivation, alcohol, hypoglycemia, certain medications, depression, smoking withdrawal, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, bipolar disorder and anxiety. Mood swings are a major part of bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression. With bipolar disorder, patients experience euphoric highs that are followed by crashes that can lead to severe depression. These crashes can come suddenly.
General Treatment
-
Treatment of mood swings usually focuses on treating underlying causes. Improving you health through diet and exercise can help remedy mood swings. Sleep in a regular cycle is also helpful, and hormonal therapy can also be used to treat hormone imbalances such as those caused by menopause.
Chemical Imbalances
-
The brain relies on a variety of chemicals, vitamins and mineral to function properly. Chemicals like Serotonin, Norepinephine, GABA, Acetylholine, Homocysteine and Dopamine have strong impacts on the mood and excesses or deficiencies of these chemicals can lead to mood swings. According to neurosurgeon Springer Wien, chemical balancing drugs like SSRI and MAOI help with chemical imbalances 50 percent of the time.
Nutrition
-
Inadequate amounts of vitamins and minerals can lead to mood swings. Magnesium, Zinc, Potassium, vitamins B6, B9, B12 and C are all needed to maintain a healthy mood. Eating cantaloupe, figs, shellfish and cauliflower will provide you all of these vitamins and minerals.
Therapy
-
Behavioral therapy takes a look at events that trigger mood swings to help patients change their associations with these triggers. Cognitive therapy focuses more on how those suffering from mood swings think about events. Those who suffer from mood swings often have extreme and unrealistic attitudes toward events that swing from love to hatred. Talking more about one's feelings has been found to help those suffering from mood swings because sufferers often keep their feelings inside and venting about feelings often has a cathartic effect.
