Types of Support Groups

Everyone goes through a difficult time in their lives at some point. Even though friends, family and people who care about them may surround them, they may still feel the need to reach out to someone who is in their exact situation so that they can cope better. That is where support groups come in. There are many different types of support groups for almost every major life-changing situation. These groups are designed to help cope and heal during a difficult time in your life.
  1. Bereavement

    • Dealing with the death of a loved one can be severely difficult. If you lost a child, parent, sibling, other family member, or even a friend, a bereavement support group is the right choice for you. Most churches and hospitals have bereavement support groups, so you don't have to go far to find one. In addition to counseling from qualified individuals, you'll also surround yourself with people who are going through the loss of a loved one just like you are. You can discuss your feelings, share your experiences and take comfort in the fact that you're not alone.

    Divorce

    • Divorce has become more common nowadays, but what most people don't consider is how emotionally devastating it can be. Many divorcees go through a long period of depression, and their children usually suffer in the process. A divorce support group can help you get through this sudden change in your life. Aside from discussing your situation with fellow divorcees, you can also learn how to help you and your children cope through such a difficult time.

    Cancer

    • Perhaps one of the most common types of support groups is cancer support groups. These groups offer a variety of options to chose from. Aside from having support groups for the various types and stages of cancer, there are also other ways to attend the support group. For example, there are telephone cancer support groups that usually occur by conference call for those who cannot make it to an actual support group in person.

There are also support groups for children with cancer. They may be curious, and have questions about what's going on with them and how it affects their family and friends. These types of support groups are designed to deal with these and other issues children with cancer may be going through. Of special interest to parents may be the support groups that are for children with terminal cancer, so that the family can help prepare for the hard road ahead.
