How to Deal with Stomach Pains from Stress

Stress can take a serious mental, emotional and physical toll on your body. While stress is often thought of as a mental ailment, it can actually cause many physical issues as well. Many people experience stomach pains from stress. These pains may occur on either side of the abdomen. They can be so intense that walking may be difficult. If you get stomach pains from stress, you must take action to reduce stress in your life.

Instructions

    • 1

Practice breathing exercises. Close your eyes and inhale slowly, mentally counting to five. Exhale at the same slow rate. Do this at least 10 times. Breathing exercises can help to slow an accelerated heart rate and bring a sense of calm to an otherwise hectic day. Make them part of your daily activities.

    • 2

Lie down with your back against a flat surface. Place your hands on your stomach and breathe deeply until the pain subsides.

    • 3

Make lists. Write down everything you have to accomplish each month, week or day. Break your tasks down into small, manageable actions. This will help you to maintain focus and to prevent feelings of stress.

    • 4

Focus on one activity at a time. If you attempt to do multiple things at once, you'll experience higher stress levels and will more likely get stomach pains. If you feel stomach pains coming on, simplify things by placing your focus on one small action.

    • 5

Get daily exercise. Cardiovascular exercise can greatly reduce stress levels. Aim for at least 20 minutes daily in whatever form you personally like. Whether it's brisk walking, cycling, swimming or jogging, you'll find you experience less stress symptoms after exercise.

    • 6

Sleep. Inadequate nightly sleep can lead to raised stress levels and more stomach pains. Get at least 7 hours of sleep nightly to keep stress at bay.

    • 7

Communicate. If you keep things bottled up inside, you are more likely to experience negative side effects from stress. Talk to a friend or family member about your worries, and you'll feel your load lighten. You may wish to see a professional therapist if you don't feel comfortable discussing your stress with friends or family members.

Try aromatherapy. Certain essential oils can help reduce stress by bringing a sense of calm and peace to your body. Breathe in lavender, chamomile, jasmine, sandalwood or vanilla scents daily to treat stomach pains related to stress.
