Fires Caused by Portable Oxygen Tanks

Many people depend on portable oxygen tanks to help them breathe or for use in industry. However, when oxygen tanks are misused, they can cause fires. While oxygen itself is not flammable, it acts as an accelerant when it comes in contact with flame or flammable materials. Proper care and use of oxygen tanks can prevent fires.

  1. Use Oxygen in Well-Ventilated Areas

    • Using oxygen in poorly ventilated areas is a major cause of portable oxygen-related fires. Fires resulting from poor ventilation occur when there is a leak in the oxygen tank and oxygen is released. Oxygen itself is not flammable, but additional oxygen in the air will cause a fire to grow rapidly. If there is anything flammable in a confined space with an oxygen leak, a spark could easily start a fire.

    Use Parts Approved for Oxygen Tank Repair

    • When repairing an oxygen tank, be sure to use parts approved for oxygen tank use. Some replacement parts, such as hoses or O-rings, may be the right size to repair the tank. However, parts that are not approved for use with oxygen tanks may contain combustible materials. For your safety, only use replacement parts that are designed for oxygen tanks.

    Store Oxygen Containers Carefully

    • Store oxygen containers in a cool place, far from any combustible materials, when not in use. It is a good idea to keep stored oxygen containers bound in an upright position to prevent them from falling. Such a fall may result in combustion.

    Be Prepared in Case of Fire

    • Be prepared for oxygen tank fires. Even in the best circumstances, accidents happen. Have working fire extinguishers in areas in which oxygen tanks are used. In addition, establish fire escape routes. Finally, always ensure you are operating oxygen tanks in well-ventilated areas.
