What Are the Dangers of Siphoning Gas?
Siphoning gas is the process of extracting fuel from your vehicle and using it for other purposes. You need a long tube and an initial force to suck the fuel out. Some people do it manually by sucking the gasoline through the tube with their mouths, while others buy gas siphons that automatically do the job. Whatever process you're using, there are dangers that you need to know before undertaking this simple, yet risky task.-
Vehicle Design
-
Newer models of vehicles now have a device that prevents people from siphoning gas. This device, known as the rollover valve, prevents the fuel tank from spilling gas during collision or when it rolls over. Removing the rollover valve to siphon gas can make the car more dangerous, especially in the event of a collision, creating a much higher potential of the gas spilling and catching fire during the event.
Imminent Personal Dangers
-
Any type of fuel is highly flammable and exposing your body to it is in itself dangerous. When siphoning gas, it's highly possible to spill the gas and make it come into contact with your skin. When gas is exposed to the air, it immediately turns into a very dangerous vapor that can cause nausea and vomiting. It can also catch fire easily and even a small spark can cause it to set aflame. Even a lit cigarette can potentially ignite fuel, making gasoline upon the clothes or skin extra dangerous.
Gasoline Ingestion
-
People who do not have a siphoning gadget and try to suck the gas out of the tank can have even more serious complications. According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, ingesting gasoline can quickly cause stomach irritation and can damage the nervous system as well as the lungs. Swallowing enough gasoline can also put an adult into a coma and may even cause death.
Storage Dangers
-
People who do not store gas properly after siphoning create potential dangers not only to themselves, but to all the members of their household. Gas is a highly corrosive substance; it can melt non-recommended containers in a matter of a few days. When a gas container leaks, the air around the container becomes toxic and potentially flammable.
