Verify that the birth occurred in Buncombe County, North Carolina. Vital records are available for those born outside the county through the state's Vital Record department.

Obtain mandatory information such as the name of the person at birth, the parents' names including mother's maiden name, and if you're applying for a certified copy of a birth certificate, be ready to provide your signature, your relationship to the person whose birth certificate you seek and photo identification.

Go to the Register of Deeds, Vital Records/Birth page on Buncombe County's website (see References). Choose the MS Word or Adobe Acrobat version and click to download an application for a copy of a vital record. Print out a copy, complete all the information and gather any applicable fees, $10 for a certified copy, 25 cents for an uncertified copy as of 2010.
