ADA Requirements for Public Access

The American with Disabilities Act of 1990 established standards that require commercial buildings to be accessible to people with disabilities. New and altered constructions are required to comply; however old buildings are exempt if alterations would compromise the structure or historical value of the building.
  1. General Access

    • New construction must provide designated handicap parking, a ramp from the ground level walkway, ramp access to the building and automatic doors. Buildings with multiple levels must provide an elevator.

    Restroom Facilities

    • Public restrooms must provide handicap accessible toilet facilities with additional space and installed grab bars. Sinks and hygiene items must be available at wheelchair-accessible height.

    General Adaptations

    • ADA requires buildings with assembly areas to provide wheelchair-accessible seating. Public telephone access must accommodate wheelchair users and include at least one telephone with capabilities for the hearing impaired. Fire alarms must include a visual alarm in addition to the audio alarm to alert people with hearing impairment.
