Meriden is a city situated in central Connecticut that was incorporated in 1867. It is located on the I-91 corridor between New Haven and Hartford and has a population of just below 60,000 residents.
  1. Types

    • Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is defined as substances that are corrosive, toxic, flammable or reactive. The most common HHW substances are paint and thinner, pesticides, fuel and pool chemicals. However, pharmaceutical products fall under a different classification and are not accepted at waste recycling centers.

    Limits

    • Garbage collectors are not allowed to pick up any hazardous waste products, nor are they accepted at municipal dumps. A specialized collection center or service is required for these products, and many cities stage a temporary collection center annually.

    Local Provider

    • United Industrial Services, located at 136 Gracey Avenue in Meriden, is the only facility in town that works with hazardous wastes. UIS is a full-service provider in the field, offering a range of services, including transportation, recycling and site remediation.

    Annual Recycling Days

    • Most municipalities in Connecticut offer a waste collection day and allow residents of neighboring towns to participate. Although there was no collection in Meriden scheduled for 2010, neighboring towns Berlin and Plainville held hazardous waste collection days in 2010.
