How to Qualify for Energy Assistance in Shelby County, Indiana
The government-funded Energy Assistance Program is administered by the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Energy assistance prevents low-income families from having their energy turned off, which could create an unsafe environment that leads to illness or injury. Though LIHEAP does not guarantee the availability of funds, any family meeting income qualifications is eligible to apply for energy assistance.In Shelby County, Indiana, energy assistance is provided through the Trinicon Outreach agency of Shelby County Human Services. Determine if you fall below the LIHEAP poverty line (see Resources). The guideline uses the number of members in your household and the entire household's combined yearly incomes to determine if applicants are at or below the current poverty level.

Call Trinicon Outreach at 317-392-3389 and set up an appointment to meet with a counselor. Describe your current living situation and ask what forms you will need to complete.

Fill out any forms requested. Take the completed forms and all pieces of identification to your appointment.

Apply through the mail. You can request a mail-in application if you are not in immediate danger of having your energy utilities turned off. Fill out the application completely and return it with all requested information.
