Requirements for Handicap Fixtures

Requirements for handicap fixtures are in place to ensure that individuals with disabilities are able to access and use common public areas comfortably. When the fixtures are installed properly, they can be used by disabled individuals to support an independent lifestyle.
  1. Water Closet

    • According to the scope and technical requirements listed in the ADA Accessibility Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities, handicap fixtures for a bathroom are to provide access, use and safety. The toilet seat should be between 17 and 19 inches above the floor with grab bars mounted behind and alongside it. A urinal should be mounted no more than 17 inches above the floor. The sink should be no more than 34 inches above the floor with knee clearance at least 29 inches above the floor. Faucets should be mounted 20 inches or less from the front edge of the counter and operable with one hand. Hot water pipes should be insulated to avoid contact. Accessories in the bathroom, including paper towels, soap, and other product dispensers, should be mounted with the highest operating part of the device no more than 54 inches above the floor.

    Public Area

    • Door handles should be operable with one hand without needing grasping and pinching of the fingers or twisting of the wrist. According to the ADAAG, elevator control buttons should be mounted 54 inches or lower to the floor so individuals in wheelchairs can access them. The spout of a drinking fountain should be 35 inches or less above the floor with the operating controls near the front.

    Auxiliary Fixtures

    • Signage is required to be accessible and readable for those with vision disabilities. The ADAAG requires the mounting height to be 60 inches above the floor and on the wall adjacent to the latch of the door. Visual alarms need to be installed 80 inches above the floor or 6 inches below the ceiling, whichever is lower. As a technical guideline, the ADAAG requires that the lamp be a strobe type with a flash rate between 1 and 3 hertz. Closed caption decoders shall be available in places of lodging, with five or more rooms, upon request.
