Grants for Ambulance Purchases
The high costs of new ambulances can be reduced with help from federal and state grant programs. Government institutions, such as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, award money to fire departments and other Emergency Medical Services providers to help them purchase ambulances.-
Assistance to Firefighters

The Federal Emergency Management Agency in 2001 began awarding grants to fire departments to help them buy vehicles, including ambulances and other equipment. FEMA, an agency of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, issued an average of $160,000 per award in 2009.

Rural Emergency Responders Initiative

The U.S. Department of Agriculture can pay for up to 75 percent of an ambulance's costs with community facilities grants. The Office of Rural Development awards the grants through its Rural Emergency Responders Initiative to help towns, cities and counties with 20,000 residents or fewer improve their public services, including those from a fire department. Communities receive grants based on their median income levels.

Rural Health Network Development

Another funding source rural communities can seek help from is Rural Health Network Development grants. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awards the grants to help communities work together to better cover rural areas that they previously could not cover well.

Pennsylvania Ambulance Grants

Many states, such as Pennsylvania, offer grants to help fire departments and other ambulance services purchase vehicles. Pennsylvania's Office of the State Fire Commissioner awards Volunteer Fire Company and Volunteer Ambulance Service Grant Program money to help volunteer fire departments, ambulance services and rescue squads pay for facilities, equipment, training and debt repayment.

Colorado Ambulance Grants

The Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment provides grants to pay for several expenses that would help improve emergency medical services in the state. The Emergency Medical and Trauma Service Provider Program pays for the purchase of ambulances as well as equipment, injury prevention, communications and other expenses.

Texas Ambulance Grants

Texas' Office of Emergency Medical Services Trauma System Coordination awards grants to EMS providers, first-responder agencies and other emergency medical organizations to help them better provide their services. The office, a part of the Department of State Health Services, awards the grants for ambulance purchases, patient care equipment, training, communication equipment, injury prevention projects and education programs.
