Walgreens Prescription Programs
With the cost of prescription medication rising year after year, Walgreens has developed ways for consumers to save money on necessary drugs. Walgreens' programs offer discounts and savings at more than 37,000 participating Walgreens pharmacies nationwide. The plans provide a simpler and less expensive approach to medication distribution, and in turn provide customers with a greater incentive to follow their medical regimens.-
Prescription Savings Club
-
Walgreens offers the "Walgreens Prescription Savings Club." Though not insurance, it's a good way to save money when filling prescriptions. There are more than 5,000 brand-name and generic medications covered by this program, including diabetic medications and supplies, and pet medicine. Although the program does not have an age limit or require a health exam or prior authorization, certain eligibility requirements must be met. Applicants must live in the United States or Puerto Rico and may not be on any publicly funded health care plan, such as Medicaid, Medicare or TRICARE. The Savings Club is in effect at any Walgreens location at any time. Annual fees of $20-$35 apply and must be paid in advance. Enroll online at walgreens.com or stop by any Walgreens location and pick up an application.
AARP
-
The Walgreens Health Initiatives Advantage offers savings on prescription medicine through AARP. Discounts cover all FDA-approved medications and maintenance prescriptions. AARP is not insurance nor a substitute for insurance, and may be canceled at any time. Generally, savings add up to 30 percent. An individual must be over the age of 50 and a current member of AARP to enroll in the prescription savings program. Discounts are only available at participating pharmacies. Annual fees apply.
Prescription Value Card
-
Walgreens' Prescription Value Card is designed to offer savings for employees. According to WalgreensHealth.com, "this discount benefit is only available through an employer or sponsor. It requires a minimum of 20 members and was designed to help the uninsured employee, part-time employee, retiree, and their families or members." Discounts are offered on more than 10,000 medications, including brand-name, generic and even specialty drugs. Average discounts range from 35 to 85 percent. Prescription history and lower-cost alternatives can be accessed online by visiting MyWhi.com. Existing insurance plans take precedence over this program.
