How to Fix HUD Houses

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offers programs to assist low income individuals obtain housing. The Section 8 choice voucher allows an individual to choose his own home or apartment. However, in order to receive the housing subsidy, the home must pass an inspection. In order to be a HUD inspector, one must meet HUD precertification requirements and complete inspector certification training provided by HUD.

      Inspect all electrical outlets, fuse boxes, disconnect boxes and other electrical components in the home. If any of those items are in disrepair, replace them. Make sure that no electrical wires are exposed and that all electrical panels are closed.

      Check for propane, natural and/or methane gas leaks. Make sure that any leaks are repaired.

      Check for any water leaks or water damage. If the ceiling has water damage, make sure that water is no longer leaking into the ceiling and then replace any damaged items.

      Check all windows and entryways. Make sure that each is accessible and that all windows and doors can be easily opened and closed. Replace any doors or windows that do not open and close easily.

      Check for any other serious structural problems not listed above. Examples include poor insulation, pealing paint, and mold or mildew buildup. Correct those problems.

      Make sure that each floor has at least one functional smoke detector.
