Instructions

  1. Report Mold

    • 1

Verify and document the presence of the mold in the school. Find out where it is located and what it looks like. If you are permitted on your child's campus and in the location of the mold, observe it and take notes about its appearance, color and shape as well as the specific building name and room number.

    • 2

Take a photograph of the mold if cameras are allowed on your child's campus. If you are using a digital camera, upload the picture to your computer. For a traditional camera, take the film to a store to get it developed.

    • 3

Research the effects of mold on children. Specifically, visit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency website and read "Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings."

    • 4

Type a professionally-toned letter to your child's principal. Include the dangers of black mold in your letter, which include creating severe allergies, inspiring asthma attacks and increasing levels of neurotoxins. Detail any way in which the mold presence has specifically affected your child or her classmates.

    • 5

Proofread and print your letter and include a copy of your photograph, if you have one. Consider including a copy of the "Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings" document.

    • 6

Send the letter to your child's school. To illustrate the serious nature of this problem, send the letter via certified mail or hand deliver it. Do not send the letter to school with your child as this may cause him to feel responsible for any negative reactions to the letter.

    Follow Up About Mold

    • 7

Ask your child to update you on the presence of mold in the school. If a crew has not come to seal off the room and initiate remediation procedures, consider further action.

    • 8

Follow up with the principal by phone if she has not given you a response. Attempt to get a deadline for the mold removal.

    • 9

Contact your child's teacher and the school's superintendent if the problem remains unresolved.

    • 10

Involve other parents if the school's superintendent takes no action. Consider reporting the presence of black mold to your township and the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).
