Post-Nasal Drip Information

Post-nasal drip is when a person feels phlegm in the back of the throat. The throat feels moist because of the drip coming from the nose. An excess of phlegm can lead to an infection.

    • Symptoms of post-nasal drip can include needing to spit mucus, throat tickle, swallowing constantly, mucus in the back of the throat, cracking voice and a constant need to clear the throat.

    Causes

    • The most common cause of post-nasal drip is allergies. These allergies may be constantly bothering you or may be seasonal. Another cause is birth control pills.

    Treatment

    • Treatment of post-nasal drip can include nasal irrigation, antibiotics prescription, surgery or allergy pills/sprays.

    Complications

    • If left untreated, post-nasal drip may result in sinus infections, viral cold or flu and may require surgery.
