What Can the Community Do to Prevent Police Brutality?

Police brutality is defined by the Community United Against Police Brutality organization as any excessive force that is meant to bring about physical or mental harm.
  1. Demonstrators

    • Police and city officials can place restrictions on time, place and manner that free speech is executed. Stay within the bounds of the restriction they set.

    Immigrants

    • The Communities United Against Police Brutality (CUAPB) notes that immigrants need to do two things to prevent problems with police: carry their immigration papers and refrain from answering questions regarding their immigration status and political views/affiliations.

    Encounters

    • When detained by police, the CUAPB advises that you do not resist, pull back or make sudden movements and that you keep your hands in plain sight away from pockets.

    Collecting Information

    • As a deterrent of brutality, the CUPB advises taking note of police officers' names and badge numbers as well as the names and phone numbers of any witnesses to an incident so that everyone can be accordingly held accountable.

    Community Awareness

    • A major thing that the community as a whole can do to prevent police brutality as well as other crimes is to pay attention to their rights and surroundings.
