Steam Bath Sauna Precautions
According to Fitness World, saunas date back more than 2,000 years ago when they were invented in Finland. A sauna is used to provide healing, relaxing and recreation. Heat is emitted through a stove that warms rocks to provide heat. Water is dispersed over the rocks to supply humidity. As temperatures can exceed 200 degrees Fahrenheit, there are certain precautions that must be followed.-
What to Do
-
Give yourself at least 20 minutes to cool down after physical activity before going in a sauna. Before and after the steam bath, drink plenty of water to keep hydrated. Take a shower before entering the sauna to eliminate the smell of body odor, which can be magnified in the steam bath. While in the sauna, work your muscles by stretching them. If you feel lightheaded or drowsy for any reason, exit immediately. Limit your steam bath to a maximum of 15 minutes. When finished with your steam bath, sit in the sauna with the door open and allow your body to perspire while it continues to cool down. Then take a warm shower, followed by a cool shower to cool off entirely.
If you are under medical care, are overweight, have low blood pressure or are on medication, check with your doctor before entering a sauna. A drug's side effects can be enhanced by the high temperature. Closely supervise children in a sauna. While it is safe for them to enjoy a steam bath, their perspiration system is not fully mature and their time in a sauna should be limited, according to Fitness World.
What Not to Do
-
To avoid feeling bloated or uncomfortable, do not consume anything an hour prior to entering the sauna. Refrain from alcohol or medication before a sauna bath to avoid dehydration or falling unconscious. If you are suffering from an open wound, eye disease or severe sunburn, avoid using a sauna. If you are pregnant, or think you might be pregnant, stay clear of any steam baths. The extreme temperature is not safe for a fetus. Infants, the elderly, pets and those suffering from any disease should not enter a sauna.
