Job Safety Topics

There are many issues to consider when you're responsible for the safety of the people who work for you. But one way to make sure all your bases are covered is to involve everyone in workplace safety by holding regular safety meetings, issuing informational handouts and developing procedures for people to follow in an emergency.
  1. Emergency procedures

    • One of the many precautions employers must take is to develop guidelines for dealing with emergencies. Compose a list of likely crises, as well as procedures for dealing with each kind. Train all building occupants in how to properly react to different types of emergencies, and stage drills so that everyone can practice what they've learned. Emergency possibilities include, fire, earthquake, bomb threat, hazardous material exposure, violence and building safety. Come up with a way to distribute emergency information and organize evacuation routes and procedures.

    OSHA regulations

    • Job safety includes the proper handling of hazardous materials, including biological agents, chemicals and other dangerous materials. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, lists specific standards employers must meet in order to comply with the law as it pertains to such substances. The agency publishes informational posters that can be displayed in break rooms or hallways. Encourage employees to be aware of OSHA regulations, to follow them and to report any violations.

    Inclement weather safety

    • Weather is another factor that can impact job safety. Severe thunderstorms, blizzards, ice, hurricanes, tornadoes and floods are just some of the weather events that can strike during the workday. Employers should have policies that take effect during bad weather and natural disasters to protect the health and safety of employees and customers. A team of essential staff should be designated to be present during inclement weather to handle business responsibilities. Employers should also have plans for how to keep the business going after an incident, including alternative workplaces and how to repair the primary workplace.
