How to Obtain BLS Certification in Jersey City, New Jersey

Jersey City Medical Center and Liberty Health are both major teaching affiliates of Mount Sinai Medical Center, one of the American Heart Association's training centers. Emergency medical technician (EMT), paramedic, CPR/BLS, ACLS, and PALS courses are offered at both places. Basic Life Support (BLS) instruction combines didactic education and hands-on skills training in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on adults, children and infants and automatic external defibrillators.

      Go to the Liberty Health AHA training center website. Class registration, payment information and a tuition waiver are accessible here.

      Fill out the tuition waiver form if you are a Liberty Health employee (this includes employees at Jersey City Medical Center and Meadowlands Hospital). On the same page, go to the "pay now" area if you are a non-employee signing up for the CPR/BLS course. Paypal, debit and credit cards are accepted for payment. The course and materials cost $80, plus $4 for shipping.

      Study the manual and material you receive in the mail. Information on the time, date and location of the training will be included. Follow the instructions for what to bring to the training class. Comfortable shoes and clothing, lunch and the BLS training manual are usually on the list.

      Attend CPR/BLS classes. The entire course and exam will take most of the day. A two-part exam must be passed in order to receive your BLS certificate. The skills test consists of performing a single- and double-person rescue on adult, pediatric and infant mannequins. The written test consists of multiple choice questions. The instructor will go over the correct answers when everyone is finished.

      Receive a BLS certificate wallet card upon successful completion of the course. This is usually given out the same day as the class. A large certificate will be mailed to you.

      Renew your BLS certificate every two years. The expiration date is shown on the BLS card, along with the date of course completion.
